With the trend of NPL players making the transition to the A-League on the rise, here is three second-tier goalkeepers A-League agents should be keeping an eye on.
MACKLIN FREKE
Club: Brisbane Roar
The perennial NPL Queensland penalty-stopper, Freke is fast becoming one of Australia's brightest goalkeeping prospects. Building on an impressive debut campaign in 2018, which saw him named on the bench of the NPL QLD Team of the Season, the 20-year old backed it up with some terrific performances for the Young Roar which saw them clinch the 2019 Y-League Championship.
Calmness personified, his reaction saves, complemented by his ability to read attackers one-on-one and from 12-yards alike, means he's looking to make the vacant second choice spot at the Roar his own, as he awaits his first professional contract.
Bon Scott
Club: Brisbane Strikers
London-born Scott is in his 7th season of NPL Queensland football, but the former Newcastle Jets junior is looking to change that. After making his debut at just 17-years of age in 2014, Scott has gone on to represent Western Pride, Moreton Bay United and Brisbane City as he has established himself as one of the most experienced and revered NPL keepers at just 22 years old.
Currently with Brisbane Strikers after being sidelined for much of 2018 with a knee injury, the one-time Australian U20 boasts a commanding aerial presence, with his penchant for last-ditch saves meaning, like his namesake, he has the potential to rock it out on the big stage.
Lachlan Hunter
Club: Brisbane Roar
Another youngster from the Roar's goalkeeping stocks, the diminutive Hunter has been turning heads with his performances this season. Deputizing for Freke in his A-League absence, the 18-year old's performances have been a saving grace for the Young Roar's often makeshift defence. A string of impressive games in the opening rounds of the season saw him pick up plaudits and accolades alike, receiving the February Save of the Month for his efforts against SWQ Thunder.
What he lacks in height he makes up for in ability, with his acrobatic saves often the difference for the Young Roar. Whilst he'll be concentrating on locking down that 1st choice Youth team spot, an A-League chance is bound to come begging.
